Having aging parents who still live at home can pose certain risks. You may start worrying that housework and landscaping are becoming too much for your older loved one(s), and seasonal home maintenance can be dangerous for those without secure balance and strength. Fortunately, senior services are available if these concerns begin bubbling up.

Senior Home Concerns

If you do have older loved ones, this concern can fall into your lap or, at least, the cost of providing services can. When seniors stay in their homes, seasonal maintenance becomes more than a chore, it becomes an issue. Certain home concerns can consist of:

  • Inspecting the air conditioning unit
  • Cleaning gutters and the roofsenior services
  • Landscaping and clearing walk paths
  • Cleaning and inspecting windows
  • Inspecting leaf and/or snow blower(s)
  • Checking home exterior for damage
  • Inspecting interior for tripping hazards
  • General cleaning interior/exterior

This list covers just some of the concerns homeowners need to be made aware of. Having older loved ones who are also homeowners may turn these concerns into safety hazards. How do you know if your parents are becoming unable to handle household maintenance?

Safety Concerns

When it comes to a loved one’s safety, price is of no concern. But, you may not even be aware that your older parents have an issue. There is no set age for older adults to seek senior services - it can be different for everyone. If you are concerned about an older loved one, there are specific questions you can ask them to verify if they need assistance.

  • Are you having trouble keeping up with household chores?
  • Do you think it would be easier to have someone else do household chores for you?
  • How has your balance been?
  • Would you feel safe on a ladder or stepping stool?
  • Can you move around your entire property safely?
  • Are any important chores being left incomplete, like mowing the lawn?
  • Is keeping up with the home becoming too exhausting?

These questions can help you determine if your parents are at a stage where they may not be able to maintain their home as easily as before. It may seem shocking at first, but this is a natural part of aging. Fortunately, there are options.

New Call-to-action

Senior Services

The first thing to consider when assisting your aging parents with maintaining their households, is, “can this be a quick fix of hiring help?” If your loved ones are still active in their neighborhood and can get around their home easily, then hiring senior services could be the solution. This help could include a landscaper, a maid, a handyman, or whatever needs your parents may have.

If you are concerned hiring help may not solve all the maintenance issues, it may be time to consider communities specifically for seniors who can live independently. Independent living can still provide a more secure location with some services, usually at a bundled cost. A third option is assisted living. Assisted living communities provide all senior services in one place.
